In the early 1960s, Graubner began to work with "colour cushions" to enhance the spatial effect of the coloured surfaces, which were later covered with a Perlon fabric

Carl Vogel, 1923-2006, former president of the Hamburg Art Academy, described himself as a "pathological case" and "passionate extreme collector". Over the course of his life, he amassed a collection of around 30,000 works of art. Gotthard Graubner was an art teacher at Lessing-Gymnasium in Düsseldorf from 1964 to 1965. In 1965, he was given a teaching position and from 1969 a professorship at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg.
