Compositional principles such as serial sequencing and rhythmic structure characterise Herbert Zangs' "brushwork". Zangs, who, due to his aversion to traditional artistic materials and techniques, is always in search of new means of expression, began to use a new technique of paint application that he had developed around 1979: he applied one or two colours to the brush and rolled it over the paper in a rotating motion. In this way, the artist combines the application of paint with action or dynamism and achieves a rhythmic colour structure.

In the two blue and yellow brushstrokes from the 1980s, executed on a white background, Zangs heightens the dynamism of the rolling process by choosing diagonals. These show alternating blue and yellow areas of colour in the width of the brush. The two colours mix at the transitions, but without breaking the blue-yellow dominance.

In addition to monochrome white and black works, Zang's oeuvre from the mid-1950s onwards also shows works with colours, in particular with the primary colours red, blue and yellow, whereby the artist usually concentrates on one or two of these colours and the tonality of the painting ground in his compositions.
