The non-objective compositions by Croatian painter Izvor Pende deal with space by means of abstract colour forms. Pende uses amorphous and geometric forms, such as vertically aligned, almost rectangular fields, linear elements, colour perspective and the possibility of suggesting spatiality through the application of paint. The glazed application of colour, which allows the ground to shine through, creates a spatial effect, while the opaque application of colour has a two-dimensional effect, closing off the space. The undefined spaces that virtually open up when looking at Pende's compositions lend them a surreal character.
In the composition created in 2020, Pende succeeds in suggesting the protrusion and recession of individual planes through the colour and shape of the individual surfaces. In the centre of the work, the coloured surfaces seem to open outwards, revealing a brighter, lighter space whose shape evokes a wall with a window opening. Despite the movement in the composition, it has a calm expression resulting from the rather muted colour scheme, including various shades of green.
