On the occasion of the 70th birthday of the painter Reiner Wagner, we are showing an extensive solo exhibition of his work, with the majority of oil paintings from 2010 and 2011 as well as individual, outstanding works from previous years. The exhibition, which focuses on landscapes and still lifes, is our fifth show of the work of the artist, who was born in Hildesheim in 1942 and lives on Lake Starnberg near Seeshaupt and in Corsica, since 1989.

The stimulus and thus trigger for the creative process, which finds visible expression in Wagner's landscape paintings and still lifes, is his fascination with visual impressions from nature or his domestic surroundings, or more precisely his studio. However, Wagner's paintings are not concerned with a naturalistic depiction of the visible world, but rather with abstracting and simplifying, condensing phenomena into artistic form. In doing so, Wagner succeeds in translating the essence of things and nature, their force and presence as well as their constantly changing expression - due to the seasons, weather conditions or time of day - into images of great intensity.

An essential prerequisite for his artistic work is his familiarity with the nature he depicts. As a result, the painter focussed exclusively on the landscape surrounding him: the Bavarian Alpine foothills, Lake Starnberg and its surroundings and the Corsican mountain landscape. New landscapes are constantly being created, but they also exhibit certain constants. Motifs such as the path, the barn, the boathouse or - in the paintings created in Corsica - the country house are always integrated anew into his landscapes. On the one hand, they bear witness to the presence of people, who are not depicted themselves, while on the other hand they form essential compositional elements.
